Make An Appointment With Your Future

I was having lunch with my friend Nekesa and her son yesterday. When I walked up to meet her, I was greeted by my friend and a baby stroller, and boy was it a sight to behold!

You see, Nekesa has always wanted to be a mom. After years of trying, she almost gave up hope. A few months ago, Nekesa finally got her wish. No, more than that–she fulfilled her destiny!

Her story to motherhood is hers to share, not mine, but I will happily say that seeing her in person catering to her beautiful son filled me with such pride.

When I asked her about how she kept up hope after years of disappointment, she told me about a motto she got from a friend that she adopted as her own:

With every disappointment, there is an appointment.

By now, I’ve had my own fair share of highs and lows. It’s taken me about 10 years to realize that on the other side of great disappointment is opportunity, blessings and joy. I know now that it is my job to accept hardships and failures and direct my energy to “the next appointment.”

Here are some of my other favorite quotes on leaning into the difficult parts of life:

“Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don’t fight them. Just find a different way to stand.” Oprah

“You drown not by falling into a river, but by staying submerged in it.” Paulo Coelho

“Stop worrying if your vision is new
/Let others make that decision—they usually do/ You keep moving on” Stephen Sondheim, Sunday in the Park With George

Life is happening for me.” Tony Robbins

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” Robert F. Kennedy

“Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It’s not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; it’s a day you’ve had everything to do and you’ve done it.” Margaret Thatcher
